Fix A Crack Inside Corner Of Drywall

You can re-tape cracks in inside corners of drywall.

One of the advantages of drywall over any other type of wall covering is that you can repair defects with just a few tools and supplies. When cracks develop in the inside corners, you can make them disappear by re-taping them and touching up the paint. To complete the repair, you should try to find out what caused the cracks in the first place. If it's a structural problem that is causing the walls to move, the cracks are likely to reappear if you don't correct it.

Instructions

1. Scrape the area around the crack with a paint scraper to remove dried joint compound that is chipping off. Cut off loose drywall tape that has separated from the wall with a utility knife.

2. Unroll enough self-adhesive fiberglass mesh drywall tape to cover the crack and cut it from the roll with a utility knife. Fold it in half along its length. Place it in the corner so it covers the crack, and press it to the wall until it sticks.

3. Lay a coat of drywall joint compound, or mud, over the tape with a 4-inch drywall blade. The mud should extend about 3 inches from the corner onto each adjoining wall. Scrape over the mud with the blade to flatten and smooth it and return the excess that you scrape off to the container.

4. Let the mud dry overnight and spread another coat on top. Extend the edges of the mud farther onto the walls than the first coat and scrape it with a 6-inch blade. The wider blade will feather the edges gradually into the wall so that the transition disappears.

5. Let the second coat dry overnight and apply a third coat, if necessary. Scrape it with the 6-inch blade.

6. Sand the final coat with 120-grit sandpaper when it dries. Paint the dried mud with wall primer, then touch up with the wall color when the primer dries.
