Install Eco-friendly Board Inside A Shower

Greenboard is used in areas that have water.

Greenboard comes in other colors than just green. Yellow or blue are also available colors and offer the same benefits as green board does. Greenboard serves as a water resistant surface and not recommended to encounter water, as this will result in damage to the greenboard. Installing green board is a relatively easy project. Greenboard is smaller than regular drywall or gypsum sheets.

Instructions

1. Apply the plastic vapor barrier to the studs surrounding the shower walls. Start at the bottom of the wall on one corner and staple the width of the plastic to the stud that corner of the wall. Roll the plastic out length wise (across the wall) and staple to every stud while pulling the plastic tight. Cut the plastic from the roll after you have reached the opposite end of the wall. Overlap each row of plastic one-inch on each other and tape the seams of the plastic. Repeat this step until all of the insulation and studs become protected with the vapor barrier plastic.

2. Measure the wall to see where a three-foot wide piece of green board will line up onto the studs. The greenboard should align centered onto the wall stud, as this will allow the second piece of greenboard to joint tightly against each other. Measure the greenboard to the appropriate measurement needed for this application and use a straight edge as a guide for your razor knife. Score the greenboard using a razor knife; just enough to cut through the paper of the greenboard. Bend the greenboard on the cut line until it snaps, then cut the backside of the greenboards paper backing to remove the cut piece. Always install the greenboard so that the factory edges make up every seam or joint on the wall, this gives the greenboard a better seal.

3. Apply the sheet rock screws vertically every seven-inches apart from each other, and one inch from the edge of the greenboard to avoid blowouts of the board. Repeat these steps throughout the application process.

4. Apply joint compound to every seam and screw used in the application of the greenboard. Using a putty knife, apply a thin layer to the seams and screws. Let the first layer of joint compound dry and sand smooth. Apply a second coat of joint compound to all of the seams and screws; let dry and sand smooth again.
