Secure Shelves To Some Sheetrock Wall

shelf

Sheetrock is widely used in the construction of walls. It can also be known as drywall, gypsum board or plaster; and is basically a layer of gypsum that is covered in layers of heavy weight paper. Sheetrock is solid but lightweight and your typical screw will not hold a heavy shelf. The ideal solution is to find a stud behind the sheetrock that you can drill a screw into. If you cannot find a stud, you'll need to use special sheetrock or drywall anchors to secure your shelf.

Instructions

Secure the Shelf Using a Stud Behind the Wall

1. Tap on the wall with a hammer at locations that are 16 inches apart horizontally. You will hear a solid sound when you reach a stud. Find two studs at the height and width you need for your shelf and mark their location with a pencil.

2. Use a stud sensor to find a stud if you'd rather not use the hammer method. Run the stud sensor across your wall horizontally until the sensor indicates the stud behind the wall. Find two studs that are the width and height you need for your shelf and mark them with a pencil.

3. Drill a hole in the wall with the power drill where you think the stud is located. You should hit wood with the drill bit. Position your shelf bracket and drill a screw through the hole in the bracket and into the stud behind the wall. If your bracket has two holes, do the same with the second hole.

4. Mount a second shelf bracket the same way you did the first at the width you need for your shelf.

Secure the Shelf Using Drywall Anchors

5. Drill two holes in the wall at the height and width that you need for your shelf.

6. Push drywall anchors into the holes.

7. Position your shelf brackets and use the drill insert a screw through the bracket hole and into the drywall anchor. Do the same with the second bracket. When the screws are tightened, the back of the anchor expands and locks the bracket onto the wall.
