Use A Knockdown Texture Drywall Surface

Thin drywall compound to create knockdown texture.

You can texture your walls to resemble the appearance of stucco, but without the labor or the high cost of real stucco. Called knockdown, California knockdown or split-trowel, the texture is generated when spraying thinned drywall compound on the walls, then knocking off the peaks of the still-wet texture. You can rent the tools from most construction rental stores and you'll need an assistant, because the process requires two people working quickly at the same time.

Instructions

1. Blend premixed drywall compound in a large bucket with plain water. Add just enough water to make the compound the consistency of a milk shake. It should drip easily from a large spoon, but not be runny. A drill with a mixer attachment is necessary to blend away any lumps that could clog the hopper gun.

2. Fill the hopper of the spray gun about half-full with the thinned drywall compound. Some hoppers are large and can be difficult to maneuver when filled with too much heavy compound.

3. Turn on the hopper gun and adjust the spray until it creates a thick, even texture on your wall, with peaks that protrude outward. Move the spray gun evenly, starting in an upper corner, working downward in a three-foot section, then moving to the next section.

4. Ask an assistant to follow behind you and lightly wipe away only the tips of the wet texture. This creates the knockdown look. It helps to practice the technique on a spare sheet of drywall before starting on the real wall.

5. Knock off the tips as you continue spraying until the entire wall is finished. Once you start, plan to finish an entire wall before taking a break. If you stop and then start again after the compound dries, lap marks will be visible.
