Lime To Seed Taters

Pickling lime can help preserve stored seed potatoes.

Although you don't want to add lime to the soil where potatoes grow because it causes a more alkaline environment, you can use pickling lime to help preserve seed potatoes that you store. Because you must store potatoes in a cool, dry place, if you don't have adequate space you can use this type of lime to keep your potatoes free of mold. Several types of lime exist: never use calcium oxide, but choose instead calcium hydroxide, also known as pickling lime or food grade lime.

Instructions

1. Cover the bottom of a wooden box with a thin layer of pickling lime.

2. Stack your seed potatoes on the lime layer in the box, creating a layer of potatoes no deeper than 5 inches.

3. Scatter more pickling lime on the top layer of potatoes. You needn't cover them completely.

4. Continue stacking 5-inch layers of potatoes in the box until it is nearly full, adding more pickling lime after each 5-inch layer of potatoes.

5. Cover the potatoes with straw and then drape a tarp over the top of your box.
