Fresh paint Drywall

Painting a home's interior is a task that yields immediate and dramatic results. There are many materials, colors and tints available for the painter to choose from. Understanding the surface to be painted is the most critical factor when starting a painting project, especially when you work with drywall.

Instructions

1. Identify the wall surface. Most new homes are constructed of lumber structural support with panels of drywall acting as the wall material. Push a small nail into the wall. If the nail slides easily into and out of the wall material with a chalky substance behind it, it is safe to assume the material is drywall.

2. Wipe down the surface of the drywall. After installation, drywall leaves a small film of dust and chalk on the wall. Gently rub the film from the wall using a soft damp cloth.

3. Look for any existing nail holes or imperfections in the wall material. Now is the time to fix, fill or repair any damage or dents on the surface of the drywall. Ensure that all of the material used to repair the wall has dried or cured before painting.

4. Apply a first coat of primer paint. Start at waist level with a roller and paint towards the ceiling. Work the primed roller back down to the floor. Get as close to the ceiling and floor seams as possible without touching them.

5. Use a fine painter's brush to cut in the areas near the floor and ceiling seams. Finish one entire wall and then paint that wall with the finish color coat. Move on to the next wall when the previous wall is completely done.

6. Paint a second, final coat of paint onto the drywall. Allow all paint to dry.
