Cut Stone Retaining Blocks

Stone chisels are constructed differently from wood chisels

Stone retaining blocks used in the garden are best cut using the traditional method of employing a hammer and chisel. Applying the right amount of force in the right place, leaves a clean, straight cut that looks more natural than is possible using mechanical cutting tools. Practice and patience are required to learn split stone retaining blocks using the traditional method.

Instructions

1. Place the stone to be split on the ground or on a semi-soft surface.

Do not attempt to split stone on a concrete floor, as you may crack the concrete.

2. Determine the place where the stone is to be split, then place the chisel blade on this line and strike it with the hammer.

Move the chisel slightly along the line, then strike the chisel again. Continue this way until you have created a line all the way around the stone.

3. Strike the stone again in the original position, except with slightly more power this time, continuing to work all the way around the stone.

After two to three passes, a small crack will begin to appear. When you see the crack appear, begin chiseling at the places where no crack shows.

4. Strike the center of the stone sharply with the chisel and hammer once the crack is evident all the way around the stone.

This motion will cleave the stone in two, leaving you with a clean cut where you chiseled at the stone.
