Do-it-yourself Obvious Comfort Replacement Windows

Double glazing refers to the placement of a second layer of glass in each window pane, creating an empty space of air that acts as insulation to keep a home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Unfortunately, double layer panes in windows are very expensive, especially when dealing with an entire house of windows. The Clear Comfort company has created a much cheaper do-it-yourself alternative to replacing all your single-pane windows.

Instructions

Typical Windows

1. Measure each window you wish to use the Clear Comfort film on. This includes the windows at the top of doors. Refer to the total in purchasing the right size and number of Clear Comfort kits.

2. Clean the frame of each window of excess dust and dirt. Let the clean frames dry.

3. Apply the transparent double-sided tape from the kit to the frame of the window, measuring at least 6 mm or ideally 19mm from the glass panes.

If you chose the magnetic removable frames option, apply the magnetic base in the same area as the double sided tape. These will allow you to remove the double glazing film for cleaning or opening the windows.

4. Press a section of the window film onto the double sided tape or magnetic framing. Cut off the excess film slowly to prevent tearing into the window area of the film. You can use a hobby knife if you are careful to prevent damaging the wooden frame of the window or the magnetic frame. Or use scissors to trim around the outside of the frame.

5. Inspect the edges to make sure the seal is true with no holes or areas where the film is bunched up or wrinkled.

6. Turn on the hair dryer and heat the edges of the film to shrink the membrane until it is smooth. If you are using the removable magnetic frames, shrink the membrane onto them when it is in the window.

7. Repeat this process for each window in your home.

Different Types of Windows

8. Fit the membrane internally to the lower sash frame for sash or double-hung windows. Fit the membrane externally to the upper sash frame. This will allow this type of window to be opened without removing the Clear Comfort Double Glazing film.

9. Measure all the frameless glass windows you have and either purchase or build a supplementary frame of hard wood or aluminum. Glue this frame to the area around the window and attach the membrane to this frame.

10. Fit a series of narrow supplemental frames around the curve of curved windows. Attach the membrane to these supplemental frames in sections if you wish the frames to be removable, or in one solid piece if this is to be permanent.
