Doityourself Drywall Texturing Techniques

Texturing walls can add dimension and character to any room.

Do-it-yourself wall texturing techniques can add depth and character to any room. With the use of a hopper gun and joint compound, dollops of compound can be flattened onto the surface of drywall to give a rustic and Spanish-style feel to an otherwise plain, boring room. Though the job is quite messy, the overall investment of time and energy can brighten a household's decor and ambience.

Instructions

1. Lay dropcloths on the ground and cover the surrounding walls with plastic tarps to prevent unwanted spills.

2. Thin the joint compound in a plastic bucket with water until it reaches the consistency of pancake batter. Pour the contents in a hopper gun.

3. Practice spraying the hopper gun, using a piece of cardboard.

4. Spray the drywall in long, vertical strokes and avoid overspraying in one area. The size of the dollops creates different textures; adjust the hopper gun's nozzle to make changes. Let the compound dry for 15 to 30 minutes until tacky.

5. Flatten the dollops of joint compound with a trowel. Work the trowel at an angle to avoid completely flattening out the dollops. The objective is the smooth the surface.

6. Apply joint compound onto any bare areas with a paintbrush and smooth out with a putty knife, using the same methods as with the trowel. Let the compound dry for 24 hours.

7. Prime and paint the walls as needed.
