Attach Drywall To Cement Blocks

You can attach drywall if you want to finish off a wall constructed of cement blocks, bricks or concrete. Unlike hanging drywall on a wall frame consisting of wood studs, the process for attaching drywall is slightly different.

Instructions

1. Measure the cement block wall with a tape measure. Put on eye protection and a dust mask. Cut furring strips with aluminum snips to match the measurement of the top, bottom and sides.

2. Ask someone to help you roll out and hold the vapor barrier against the wall. Tack the furring strips over the vapor barrier to all four sides of the cement block wall with masonry nails and a hammer. If you need more than one roll of vapor barrier to cover the width, tape the seams with vapor barrier tape.

3. Drill pilot holes into the cement block wall through the vapor barrier with a masonry bit. Place the pilot holes about 24 inches apart from top to bottom and 24 inches apart horizontally. Measure the exact location of each pilot hole and mark a drywall panel with a marker using the same measurements.

4. Put anchors into the pilot holes and hammer in with a rubber mallet. Put a drywall panel against the cement block wall, abutting the corner. Drive drywall screws into the pilot holes with a screw gun. Repeat with consecutive panels until the cement block wall is covered in drywall.

5. Tape the seams where each panel meets with drywall tape. Spread joint compound over the seams using a putty knife and let dry as long as the manufacturer recommends. Sand the joint compound smooth with sandpaper to match the drywall panels.

6. Apply a coat of primer with a paint brush and let dry for three to four hours, then apply the first coat of paint. Let dry and cover with another coat of paint to finish the wall.
