Large windows provide extra natural lighting to any room, as well as bigger views. Having large windows also creates an open, generous feeling that contributes to the overall atmosphere of your home. However, you may need privacy at night and warmth during winter months, so it's necessary to find the right kind of window treatments for your large windows.
Floor-to-Ceiling Windows
If you have extra-high, floor-to-ceiling windows, choose a combination of silk drapes and white sheers. Striped silk will enhance the drama of the window's glorious height. Choose widely spaced, narrow stripes to avoid a busy look, in colors that work with the decor. Attach these to generously sized curtain rings, and hang them on a thick rod with metallic gold or silver finials.
Grommet Panels
If you have large windows with a modern decor, consider a ceiling-mounted curtain rod, with simple grommet-top panels. Grommet curtain panels hang from the grommet holes within the curtain top, which creates perfectly straight folds in the fabric when the curtains are pulled aside. This is a very clean, modern look, and you can purchase them ready-made in a large variety of fabrics, both in solid colors and prints at stores such as JCPenney and Ikea.
Rows of Romans
If you have a series of large windows right next to each other, consider using a row of simple Roman shades, one for each window. Roman shades are un-intrusive window treatments that won't overpower a window's beauty. They have a simple design of a single panel with hidden strings that make it possible for you to raise them up and away during the day. Or choose a bottom-up design, where the shade is raised to cover the window, instead of lowered.
Sea Grass and Other Natural Materials
For an earth-tone decor, choose a simple, natural material such as sea grass. You can find sea grass shades in a variety of Roman-shade styles. Sea grass, woven woods and abaca (from a type of banana plant) are available in many pale, neutral shades, and darker, earth-tone colors. Combine them with matching silk panels hung from a ceiling rod for contrast.
