Synthetic stucco is applied with a trowel.
Synthetic stucco is a product that is less expensive and less labor intensive to install than standard-material stucco. This product is typically rubber based and requires only two coats, rather than the typical three-coat application for standard cement-based stucco. Synthetic stucco can be colored and textured in the same way standard stucco is textured.
Instructions
1. Cover the working surface with insulation board. Screw the insulation board over the studs or directly on top of plywood. Use screws coated in ceramic, and use plastic washers so you have a flat surface on which to apply the stucco.
2. Wrap any locations of the insulation board that are not foam covered and will be exposed to synthetic stucco with plastic mesh. Lay down a thin coat of joint compound on both sides of the edge you're backwrapping and press the plastic mesh into it so the mesh covers the edge. Let this dry overnight before continuing.
3. Mix the synthetic stucco powder with water until it's the consistency of peanut butter. Use an electric drill and mixer paddles to make this process simpler.
4. Apply the first coat of synthetic stucco with a trowel. Spread an even coat of synthetic stucco to the depth of 1/8 inch. Let this dry overnight before continuing.
5. Complete the stucco with the application of the finish coat. Trowel the synthetic stucco over the base coat, making sure you cover the surface fully. The second coat should not exceed 1/8 inch in thickness. Allow the synthetic stucco to fully dry.
