Tools For Sanding

Many metalwork and woodwork jobs require sanding. Over the years, sanding tools have been improved, but the basic use of the sanding tool has stayed the same.

Hand Sanding Tools

Sanding blocks are made of thermoplastic rubber with a spring-loaded mechanism that holds 3- by 21-inch sanding belts.

Sanding pads are 5-inch or 6-inch hand pads to which you apply sanding discs.

Electric Sanders

Orbital sanders feature a balanced counterweight system that allows the user to take full advantage of the 11-inch diameter drive pad--making the orbital sander work exactly like a human hand, but with 50 percent less effort.

Flex sanders are used to sand contoured and intricate areas. Flex sanders have a revolving head with cushioned bristles. The sander adapts to the depth of the area being sanded.

Drum sanders are used to sand flat pieces of wood evenly.

Oscillating spindle sanders are made of a thin, vertical sanding column. This type of sander is most effective for sanding concave and convex pieces of wood.

Detail sanders, commonly known as triangle sanders, are designed to sand corners and tight areas. This sander is often used on remodeling projects.

Inflatable Sanders

Inflatable sanders have a motor and air tube that connects to the sanding tool. These sanders conform to the surface being sanded.
