What Exactly Are Soundproof Walls Made From

Soundproof walls have a multitude of uses in homes and businesses. However, not all soundproof walls are identical because different construction methods and materials absorb various sound frequencies.

Sound Transference Class (STC) Codes

If a building partition is assigned a high STC rating, then less sound is audible on the opposite side. Human voice transfers through a partition with an STC rating of 25 or less. It is desirable for a soundproof wall to have a STC rating greater than 45.

Minor Soundproofing of an Existing Wall

Apply latex-based acoustical paint, polyester wallpaper or cork tiling to an existing wall's surface to reduce transference of sound by 30 percent.

Heavy Soundproofing of an Existing Wall

Apply Soundboard laminate to an existing wall. Afterward, construct a new 2-inch metal frame partition one-half inch away. Place regular fiberglass insulation between the two partitions before sealing it with 5/8-inch drywall.

Staggered Stud Wall Design

According to Al's Home Improvement Center, the most efficient soundproofing method is by constructing two staggered stud walls. This wall system is constructed using Soundboard, Styrofoam laminated studs, fiberglass insulation and 5/8-inch drywall attached to a resilient metal channel (see Reference 1).

Ultimate Soundproofing

Prefabricated acoustical wall panels, constructed with concrete or cotton and cellulose fibers, are used to soundproof walls in sound-intense environments, such as clubs or theaters.
