Remove Overcoming Rust On Metal

Rusted metal

All metal surfaces are susceptible to rust, but rust typically occurs from excessive moisture not being cleaned off of an object. When removing rust, it is best to try to get rid of it as soon as it is noticed. That will allow you to spend less time and energy to remove and repair the area. You only need a handful of supplies and not too much of your time.

Instructions

1. Prep the area for rust removal. Make sure that your hand sander is plugged in, and then put on all safety gear. You must keep all of your eyes protected, and your skin, nose and mouth covered to prevent acid burns or inhalation of the product.

2. Turn the sander on low, and gently place it against the rusted area. Move it in a circular motion to loosen up as much rust as possible. This will also help smooth out the metal surface.

3. Scrape off excess rust with the wire brush.

4. Apply a small amount of phosphoric acid gel, or naval jelly, to the area using a dry, soft cloth. Rub in a circular motion and be sure not to drip. Use another dry cloth to wipe it off after letting it sit on the area for about 10 minutes. The naval jelly turns the rust into a water-soluble phosphate compound making it easy to wipe off of the metal surface.

5. Apply one thin coat of anti-corrosive primer using a sponge paintbrush. Bristle paintbrushes should be avoided because they will leave streaks. The primer coat will prevent rust from taking over the surface of the metal again as well as keep it shiny.
