Plaster of paris (usually just called plaster) is used to make molds, chalk and masks, as well as other craft projects. It acts like cement, but is more easily manipulated and remains pliable when dry. Plaster of paris is a simple material to make at home, and making it can be an enjoyable project. There are different ways to make plaster of paris, with most materials found in the home, making this an inexpensive project as well.
Instructions
Making Plaster of Paris with Glue
1. Spread newspaper on a table to protect the surface.
2. Prepare materials. Measure 2 cups glue and 1 cup warm water.
3. Pour white glue into large mixing bowl. Add a few drops of cold water. Beat with wooden spoon or spatula until thin and smooth.
4. Add warm water, and mix until smooth. Mixture should have a soupy consistency.
5. As soon as mixture is smooth, pour into mold.
Making Plaster of Paris with Flour
6. Spread newspaper on a table to protect the surface.
7. Prepare materials. Measure 3 cups flour and 2 cups warm water.
8. Add flour to large mixing bowl and whisk. This will fluff the flour and make it airy.
9. Add warm water. Mix with wooden spoon or spatula until there are no lumps. Plaster should be smooth but firm and easy to stir.
10. As soon as plaster is at correct consistency, pour into mold.
