Install Sm Foam

SM Styrofoam, a multi-purpose extruded polystyrene board, aids in meeting the foundation and slab-market necessities. SM Styrofoam has a closed-cellular insulation structure that resists water absorption, which allows the acquisition of higher R-value (RSI), a mandatory property needed for residential foundations.

SM Styrofoam applications guard against ground leakages and freezing temperatures. The easy-to-handle, ship-lap edges allow for smooth installation that ensures energy conservation having to cut and dispose unnecessary waste. Read over local building codes before attempting to install SM Styrofoam insulation boards.

Instructions

1. Clear obstructions in the path of installation. Measure the length of the foundation wall from top to bottom. Angle the utility knife blade to create a guide-cut outline. Apply pressure to cut a straight line into the insulation panels.

2. Apply a rectangular pattern of beaded, foam-compatible adhesive to the insulation panel backing. Press it on to the desired location on the wall.

3. Use a power driver to create holes penetrating 1 1/2-inch deep. Mount 1-by-3-inch wood furring strips horizontally or vertically over the SM Styrofoam insulation panels using concrete fasteners. Space the concrete fasteners no more than 24 inches apart.

4. Measure the wall's length and corners with a T-square ruler. Trace the measurements on to the 1/2-inch gypsum drywall with a pencil. Cut the traced outline with a utility knife. Apply beaded silicone caulk to fasten the gypsum drywall to the wood furring strips. Mix drywall mud and pour into a 14-inch pan. Apply and smooth the mud into the crevices with a drywall knife. Allow 24 hours for the mud to dry.

5. Roll out polyethylene sheeting adjusted to the ground's length, lapping joints 12 inches or greater Install vapor retarder to the band joists facing the inside to seal against excess moisture. Weigh down the ground cover with 1 to 2 inches of sand to seal against moisture exposure. Consult your local building codes for ventilation requirements.
