Estimate Drywall Needed

All those drywall sheets weren't purchased by guesswork.

If you plan to install drywall in a room, one of your first steps must be to estimate accurately how much you will need. Otherwise you may purchase too little and have to waste time purchasing more, or too much, wasting money. Estimating how much drywall you will need is not difficult. Calculate the square feet of wall and ceiling in the room, and subtract any areas that don't need drywall. From that result, you can figure out how many drywall sheets to buy.

Instructions

1. Measure the height and width of the first wall. Multiply height by width to obtain the area of the wall in square feet.

2. Repeat Step 1 for the other walls and the ceiling.

3. Add together the areas in square feet of all the walls and the ceiling to obtain the total square feet for the room.

4. Measure the height and width of each area not to be covered by drywall, such as doors and windows. Multiply the height by the width of each area not to be covered, and add them all together.

5. Subtract the results of Step 4 from the results of Step 3 to determine the total actual area to be covered.

6. Multiply the actual area to be covered by 1.1 to add a 10 percent margin for waste.

7. To calculate how many sheets of drywall you need, divide the total area to be covered, plus 10 percent, by the area of one sheet of drywall. For example, the area of a 4-by-8-foot sheet is 32 square feet. The area of a 4-by-10-foot sheet is 40 square feet. The area of a 4-by-12-foot sheet is 48 square feet.

If the area you needed to cover plus 10 percent totalled 500 square feet, for example, you would need to buy 16 sheets of 4-by-8 drywall (500 divided by 32, rounded up); or 13 sheets of 4-by-10 drywall (500 divided by 40, rounded up), or 11 sheets of 4-by-12 drywall (500 divided by 48, rounded up). Always round up to the next sheet when results don't come out even.
