Clay soil represents a challenge to most gardeners and landscaping. However, clay soil can be amended, or "dissolved," by adding organic material to improve the soil structure. This can decrease compaction, improve draining, increase nutrient content and create pore space so that plants can "breathe." Dissolving clay soil is not an easy process, but it can greatly improve your garden's growing potential.
Instructions
1. Dig several soil samples, according to the directions in your soil testing kit, and take them to a lab to be analyzed. Soil testing kits are available through your local agricultural extension office, home improvement stores, gardening stores and online.
2. Till the soil to a depth of approximately 8 inches.
3. Distribute a layer of the recommended organic soil amendment approximately 2 inches thick over the clay soil, using a shovel. Using the tiller, work this layer into the soil, making sure to separate any large clods of clay.
4. Spread a second 2-inch layer of soil amendment and till it into the soil.
5. Spread organic mulch over the soil, such as wood chips or compost. Organic mulch will gradually improve the soil structure as it decomposes into the soil.
