Refinish Wallboard

Restore walls to create a beautiful living space.

Wallboard is a construction material that is also known as drywall, plasterboard or gypsum board. Wallboard covers exposed studs and beams to hide electrical wires, plumbing pipes and insulation. Homeowners and contractors paint the wallboard surface or hang wallpaper to give the rooms a finished appearance. Wallboard can incur damage from accidents, repairs or redecorating. Removing wallpaper can cause the wallboard's paper covering to tear and create an uneven surface. Gaining access to wires or pipes in the wall can also cause damage and necessitate refinishing.

Instructions

1. Wipe the walls with a damp rag to remove dirt or old wallpaper glue. Wallpaper glues are generally water-soluble and will wash off the surface.

2. Hammer in loose or popped nails or remove nails and fill in the old nail hole with joint compound.

3. Sand down high spots on the wall with fine-grit sandpaper. Do not sand vigorously as this will further damage the paper covering.

4. Fill in cracks, depressions and holes with drywall joint compound. Apply joint compound with a flexible putty knife, pressing it deeply into the damaged areas. Build the joint compound up to slightly higher than the wall surface and allow it to dry fully, generally one to two hours. Sand the repair smooth with fine-grit sandpaper.

5. Paint primer on the walls if you are adding paint. Apply a coat of wallpaper sizing if you are finishing the walls with wallpaper.

6. Apply two coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry completely, usually three to four hours.
