Use easy-to-install compression fittings to replace leaking connectors with PEX tubing.
Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pipe is a flexible tubing plumbing product for water supply lines. It is used for water supply to household plumbing fixtures. PEX pipe requires a sleeve for applications that require it is installed through foundation walls so the walls cannot compress or tear the plastic during normal shifting of the building and surrounding soil during seasonal temperature changes.
Caulk Around PEX for Exterior Openings
Caulk may be used around exterior openings to prevent drafts. However, use only water-soluble gypsum-based caulk around PEX pipe when sealing exterior openings. Petroleum based caulks and sealants deteriorate the plastic. This will cause leakage or breaks in the water supply line.
Replace Leaking Connectors
Caulk cannot be used as a sealant for leaking connections. Replace leaking connections with new plumbing connectors. The connectors that work with the PEX water system include cold expansion polymer fittings, cold expansion metal fittings or cold expansion compression fittings.
Cold expansion polymer fittings and cold expansion metal fittings are easy to use with PEX tubing. A sleeve is placed over the tubing. The pipe is pushed onto the fitting. Slide the sleeve over the pipe where it is connected to the fitting. The sleeve is then crimped or screwed into position to seal the PEX tubing to the expansion fitting depending on the type of fitting used.
Compression fittings are even easier to use with PEX tubing than expansion fittings. The PEX tubing is cut to size with no rough edges. Simply push the PEX tubing into the compression fitting and the fitting grabs the tubing and holds it securely in place against a soft plastic gasket.
