Pruning the camellia's roots allows you to keep it the same size.
Camellias thrive when grown in containers and require different care from those grown in the garden. Soil in containers tends to build up fertilizer salts and becomes depleted of nutrients. Camellia specialists suggest repotting the camellia at least once every two to three years. You can repot the juvenile camellia into the next size larger pot until it reaches the size you desire. After that, cut the roots to replant it into the same size pot. It's known as "root pruning." Cut the camellia's roots in February or March.
Instructions
1. Remove the camellia from the pot and set it on a work surface, such as a table or counter.
2. Use a pruning saw or sharp knife to cut 1 inch from the bottom of the camellia's rootball, and around the sides of it, if you want to plant it back into the same pot.
3. Use the knife to slice into the camellia's rootball, in 10 random areas around the rootball if you want to plant it into a larger pot. Insert the knife into the ball and slice downward, 1 to 2 inches. This encourages new feeder root growth.
4. Combine equal parts of sand, coarse peat moss, small chunks of pine bark and commercial camellia planting mix.
5. Add the new planting mix to the pot until it is 1/4 of the way full. Place the camellia's rootball in the pot. It needs to sit at the same depth as it did in the old pot, so add or remove soil to get it to the proper depth. Fill the pot with the soil and pat gently around the base of the camellia to remove trapped air.
