Every potato
holds the material necessary for growing a new plant.
Organic potatoes grow without any commercial or synthetic material. This means that the gardeners have used only organic compost and natural soil to nurture the potato vine to maturity. Organic potatoes are the same as commercial potatoes, though, in that they will sprout new potato plants.
Seed Potatoes
Every potato contains the growing material for the new plant, and will sprout several new vines if given the chance. Organic potatoes make perfect seed potatoes in an organic garden.
Breakdown
Each seed potato has several eyes, or sprouting points. New shoots will emerge from these points, given time, and grow into mature potato vines.
Preparation
To use organic potatoes as seed potatoes, gardeners cut the potatoes into 1- to 2-inch sections that contain two to three eyes, and plant the pieces in the garden. With the correct soil and watering, each eye will produce a potato shoot, and eventually a fruitful vine.
