Apply Venetian Plaster Over Concrete Block

Completed Venetian plaster project

Venetian plaster refers to both a blend of plaster and the method for applying it. In general, Venetian plaster will have a smooth, polished look, as opposed to the standard plaster look. The process of applying Venetian plaster can be time-consuming.

Instructions

1. Use a wire brush to scrub the concrete thoroughly to remove any dirt or debris. Sweep and mop or vacuum the room as needed to eliminate the waste from the walls.

2. Apply an ample layer of concrete primer to the concrete walls, using a ½-inch-nap paint roller. Make sure you cover the entire surface of the walls. If you don't, these areas will not be as smooth and polished looking as the rest of the wall. Clean the paint roller thoroughly with warm water and allow it to dry completely. Wait for the concrete primer to dry before continuing, which should take about 2 or 3 hours.

3. Using a stainless steel spatula, apply the base coat of Venetian plaster to the walls. Get some plaster on the steel spatula and place the plaster on the wall. It will be a lump when you put the plaster on the wall. Using a circular motion, smear the Venetian plaster across the wall. Work in small batches, so that the plaster doesn't begin to harden before you get it all applied properly. Ensure that your base coat covers the entire wall. Allow the Venetian plaster to dry for 4 to 6 hours.

4. Apply the second coat of Venetian plaster in the same manner. This second coat can be the same color as the base coat of Venetian plaster, or it can be a contrasting or complementary color to the first coat. Allow this second coat to dry for 4 to 6 hours.

5. Sand the walls gently with fine-grit sandpaper, such as 600 grit. This will burnish the Venetian plaster, allowing the texture to become extremely smooth. Areas of the base coat will show through the second coat and give the walls a multitonal appearance. Clean up the dust from the sanding by either sweeping and mopping or vacuuming the area.

6. Apply a coat of liquid furniture wax to the walls after the sanding is done. Pour the furniture wax in a painter's pan, and use the ½-inch-nap paint roller to apply it to the walls, just as you would paint. Allow the wax to dry for 4 hours before touching it. To keep your completed Venetian plaster looking shiny, clean the walls on a regular basis with a damp cloth.
