Procedure For Grinding A Mineral Right Into A Fine Powder

Minerals can be ground for a variety of purposes, including use in makeup.

With so many cosmetic powders on the market, choosing the right one for you can seem like a daunting task. Mineral makeup has gained popularity, but minerals must go through a grinding process before becoming makeup powder.

Choosing Minerals

Minerals have a number of beneficial properties that vary from mineral type to mineral type. Depending on the need or product, different minerals must be gathered. In makeup, minerals like mica and iron oxide add an iridescent shimmer effect, while zinc oxide and titanium oxide have skin calming effects that help heal blemishes.

Grounding Minerals

Soil or rock material with a high content of the chosen minerals gets broken apart and sifted, thereby extracting the minerals from the unusable parts. The minerals get sorted and separated from one another and then undergo a mechanized mortar and pestle type of grinding until each extracted mineral becomes a fine powder.

Finishing Mineral Powder

The minerals sit out to dry fully after being grounded. Depending on the desired purpose for the mineral powder, additives may be mixed in. For example, mineral makeup often gets mixed with other minerals, vitamin E, shea butter or other skin care protectants.
