Create a stucco finish with joint compound.
Use joint compound to make a faux stucco appearance on the walls. Joint compound is available at home improvement stores and is a DIY-friendly product. Use ready-mixed joint compound to convert bland smooth walls to stucco walls. Apply the joint compound in patches, leaving smooth wall in between, for a worn stucco wall appearance or apply stucco to the full wall. Apply stucco using thin coats of joint compound; you can always add more but sanding it off if you apply too much is a messy and time-consuming process.
Instructions
1. Mix the joint compound with the drill to loosen it. Push the mixer paddle into the drill; the end of the mixer paddle is shaped like a drill bit and slides into the drill. Tighten the mixer paddle by twisting until it locks in place in the drill. Plug in the drill and put the mixer paddle in the joint compound. Turn on the drill and thoroughly mix the joint compound. Turn off the drill prior to removing the paddle from the joint compound.
2. Test your application method by applying joint compound to a scrap piece of drywall or plywood with a drywall trowel. Experiment with the amount of joint compound needed to achieve the desired appearance before you apply it to the walls of your home.
3. Trowel the stucco onto the wall. Spread it thin and vary the amount of pressure and the angle of the trowel to alter the texture. Make large swipes of joint compound. Swipe the joint compound onto the wall with the trowel, moving it in various directions to create the uneven faux stucco surface.
4. Add texture by creating slices through the joint compound with a knife. Use a butter knife and and drag it through the joint compound in short lengths.
5. Allow the joint compound to dry overnight before painting or glazing the faux stucco. Painting the walls when the joint compound is wet results in an uneven and discolored wall.
