Hang And Mount Products On Metal Structures

If you have a metal garage or a pole barn style utility building that you would like to hang items on, don't worry; it isn't all that difficult. Hanging items on a metal structure is similar to hanging items on drywall, wood or plaster. The major difference is that bolts take the place of nails. Nails won't work very well on metal. The nail hole will eventually expand and do damage to the building. Nuts and bolts form a much more secure bond.

Instructions

1. Measure and mark the spots on the wall for the items. The type and size of bolt depends on the items you are hanging. A 1/4-inch bolt is sturdy enough to support most items. The placement of the bolt also depends upon the type of item. If you are hanging a picture, the bolts need to be set in such a way that the picture hangs evenly and at the appropriate height. Avoid areas with wires, pipes and studs.

2. Select the proper drill bit. Use a metal bit to drill holes in the metal. Measure and mark the length on the drill bit with masking tape. Wrap a piece of masking tape around the drill bit as a guide.

3. Drill the hole in the metal wall. Place the drill on the marked spot. Turn the drill on and hold it level as you drill. Stop drilling when tape reaches the wall. Repeat the process until all the holes are drilled.

4. Insert a bolt into the hole. Insert the bolt from the outside of the wall in. This prevents rain from coming through the hole. Secure the bolt with a nut. Tighten the nut until it is flush with the wall.

5. Hang the items on the bolts. Ask a friend to help you. An extra set of eyes ensures that everything is level.

6. Apply caulk around the bolts on the exterior side of the building. This provides extra security against leaks.
