Soundproof Technology

There are many different ways for soundproofing.

The world is a loud place with sounds bombarding you everywhere from the car, outside and even in your home. There have been many technologies developed to help reduce noise and make life a little quieter. Some of these technologies have been around for decades and others have only recently been developed.

History

Soundproofing technology first became understood around the early 20th century with the development of acoustics in building. Scientists began to research how sound works and how sound waves travel, reflect and are absorbed. It was discovered that certain materials could deflect sound, others could absorb the waves and eventually developed ways to cancel sound waves through technology.

Types

There are many types of soundproofing technology developed over the years. Soundproof windows utilize multiple panes of glass to keep sounds from escaping or entering the home. Insulation and padding have been used to control sound in recording studios, businesses and residential homes. Electronics have been developed for head phones that do not reflect or deflect sound, but mimic opposite sound waves to cancel them out.

Benefits

There are many benefits associated with soundproofing technology. Headphones and ear plugs can reduce the likelihood of hearing problems associated with loud noises like plane engines. Without bleeding in of other instruments, audio recordings have been crisper and more detailed. Soundproofing technology eliminated the need of musical artists to all be in the same room during recording.

Considerations

Using soundproofing technology such as windows and headphones can be more expensive than standard technology. Standard headphones can be purchased for only a few dollars, but sound canceling headphones can cost several hundred dollars. Soundproof windows are about twice as expensive as standard windows. You need to decide if the reduction in noise is worth the additional cost.

Misconceptions

While these technologies will reduce the amount of sound, nothing can eliminate sound completely. Sounds will still get inside the house despite soundproofing windows and insulation, and noise canceling headphones will not cancel the sounds completely and some will get through. These technologies will help with noise reduction, but nothing can eliminate noise completely.
