Homeowners will sometimes notice trails of rust coming out of the plaster on their drywall. Another problem is plaster cracking off of the wall. These problems can be attributed to drywall nails rusting.
Locating the Problem
Visually examine the wall for swell marks or rust trails. The most common areas are the ceiling, where it meets a wall, and exterior walls. These are most commonly exposed to moisture and temperature swings which will cause rust and swelling.
Popping Screw Heads
Screw heads that are exposed to moisture will actually expand and contract during temperature swings. This will also create the problem of plaster popping off the wall, which is caused by moisture from humidity filling the space between the wood, drywall and the screw.
Rusting Drywall Screws
The moisture that accumulates in the gaps between the wood, drywall and the screw can cause great amounts of damage. The screws rust, and then this is transferred into the plaster. This repair can be expensive, especially if a large portion of the drywall has been exposed.
