Joint compound spills are common when finishing drywall.
Joint compound, used to finish out drywall panels for interior walls is sloppy, and if you don't protect hardwood floors by covering them with drop cloths, it's very likely that you'll have some compound to clean off your floor. Fortunately, it's not difficult to clean up the compound and the messes won't do any permanent damage to your floor. Sheetrock is a brand name of drywall panels, made by the USG Corporation, located in Canada and sold extensively in the United States. Joint compound is also called Sheetrock compound, drywall compound or drywall mud.
Instructions
1. Protect hardwood floors by covering them with a drop cloth if you're taping joints or making repairs to the wall. It's important to use only a nonslip drop cloth because joint compound creates a slippery hazard on top of plastic drop cloths or nylon tarps.
2. Leave dropped globs of wet joint compound where they land, but try to minimize the globs that hit the floor. Don't walk in the globs or smear them.
3. Scrape dried globs of drywall compound from hardwood floors with a plastic putty knife. These knives are inexpensive and available at hardware stores and lumber yards. Once the compound dries completely, bumping it with the putty knife will dislodge it and it will come off in large chunks.
4. Pick up the large chunks of dried compound.
5. Vacuum up small bits of drywall compound and drywall dust with a wet/dry canister vacuum. Not only can globs of joint compound fall on the hardwood, the dust from sanding joint compound can be substantial and a wet/dry vacuum is the best way to remove it.
6. Wipe down the hardwood only after you've removed all chunks and vacuumed away the dust. A damp rag or sponge will quickly remove any lingering residue.
