What's Alpha Mixing

Alpha blending
is used in computer graphics to achieve transparency and animation.

Alpha blending is used in computer graphics to show translucency by combining the alpha channel with layers of an image, to display an alpha bitmap. By implementing alpha blending, the user can create transparency and animation through different layers of color, material and texture.

Alpha Bitmap

Containing varied levels of the colors red, green and blue, the pixels of an alpha bitmap are used in alpha blending to determine the level of transparency, or alpha channel, of the image being blended.

Alpha Channel

In a 32-bit graphics system, the alpha channel contains 256 levels of translucency ranging from complete transparency (0) to completely opaque (255).

Implementing Alpha Blending

Using alpha blending allows colors, textures and materials on one surface to be blended onto another surface with transparency. Alpha blending can be applied to images and videos to create different animations including fade in and out, clouds, smoke, vapor trails, flames, explosions, billboarding and others.
