Perform A Sitz Bath In Your Own Home

Bathrooms in Europe commonly have a bidet for sitz baths.

A sitz bath is often recommended by physicians or nurses as a treatment method following an episiotomy or surgery to remove hemorrhoids. Using a sitz bath allows you to soak the areas around the buttocks, genitals and the area in-between, known as the perineum. Regular use of a sitz bath helps reduce pain and discomfort while promoting healing. You don't need access to a hospital sitz bath to take one as you can also take a sitz bath at home.

Reasons to Use a Sitz Bath

You can sit in a sitz bath for 10 to 15 minutes to provide relief from symptoms of anal fissures, menstrual cramps, and bladder or yeast infections. Additionally, taking a sitz bath is healing after rectal surgery, cystoscopy or vaginal surgery. In Europe, you can use a bidet, which looks like a cross between a toilet and bathtub, to take regular sitz baths simply for cleanliness and hygiene.

Symptom Relief From Sitz Baths

The soothing warmth of a sitz bath helps speed up the healing process following a surgical procedure or during recovery from a health condition. Soaking in the warm water can relieve pain and relax the muscles to end muscle spasms. If you are dealing with the compulsion to scratch, due to itchy hemorrhoids or a yeast infection, a sitz bath can relieve itching. You can also use a sitz bath to soothe discomfort following a painful bowel movement.

Taking a Sitz Bath at Home

You can take a sitz bath at home with a store-bought manufactured sitz bath or by using your bathtub. Follow the manufacturer's directions for the small tub that sits on top of your toilet. Alternately, turn your bathtub into a sitz bath by filling it with 2 to 3 inches of warm, not hot, water. Soak for up to 20 minutes three times daily. If the water becomes cool during your bath, replace it with warm water. As you soak, ensure your buttocks, genitals and perineum are submerged in the warm water.

Sitz Bath Additives

You can use warm water in your sitz bath that is very soothing and healing by itself, but a few additives mixed in increases your comfort and benefits. Mixing 2 to 2 1/2 ounces of baking soda to your bath can help soothe the itching and discomfort caused by a yeast infection. Alternatively, you can add 1/2 cup of salt and white vinegar to your sitz bath for vaginal infection relief.
