Eco-friendly Camping Items

Campers have begun to demand that their favorite gear manufacturers produce equipment from sustainable materials and use less fabric and chemical coatings.

The desire for living green has extended beyond the household into our travel habits. Even campers and outdoor enthusiasts, long known for embracing the green lifestyle, have begun to look for ways to make their outdoor experience even more eco-friendly by purchasing gear that is made from sustainable, organic or recycled materials, or reduces the need for batteries or electricity.

Sustainable Materials

Several types of camping gear can be manufactured with sustainable materials. Instead of nylon rope, some outdoor enthusiasts prefer to purchase rope made from coated hemp, which is a natural and sustainable fiber. Similarly, instead of metal or plastic tent poles or cooking utensils, many are turning to poles or utensils made from bamboo. Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants in nature, and many eco-conscious outdoors people prefer it because it has the durability of wood but is more easily replaced in nature. Sleeping mats and tarps can be made with rushes and other natural grasses instead of heavy coated plastics.

Recycled Materials

If the piece of camping equipment can't be made from sustainable materials, it can almost certainly still be made from recycled materials. Waterproof bags, tent fabric and even inflatable mattresses can be made from recycled plastics. Clothing meant for outdoor use can also be made of recycled plastics and fiber so that they retain their insulating or waterproofing characteristics but are eco-friendly at the same time. Examples of clothing that can be made from recycled content are vests and jackets, socks, sweaters and even hiking boots.

Organic Materials

Fibers and fabric products can be produced from organic materials. Organic farms use natural pesticides and herbicides, which reduces the amount of chemicals in the environment. Fabric-sided coolers for food, clothing, tent materials, and other fabric or fiber materials can be made from organically grown cotton or hemp. Look for the organic seal on the product to ensure that it meets the federal standards to be certified organic.

Solar Power

Eco-conscious campers consider how their electrical gear is powered. Batteries pollute the environment and electrical plugs are difficult to use and sometimes impractical when camping. Weather radios, watches, compasses and even GPS systems can be powered by the sun. Even on cloudy days electrical equipment can get enough rays to run efficiently. Items that are solar-powered are portable and they are non-polluting.
