Develop A Fluorescent Lighting Soffit

Soffits help provide indirect lighting.

Lighting soffits hide fluorescent light fixtures and give off light in an "indirect" manner. The term "indirect lighting" is the result of the soffit causing the light to bounce off the ceiling and into the room. Installing light fixtures inside a soffit is a clever method for lighting a room without cutting a hole in the ceiling to install ceiling-mount light fixtures. The one thing to remember is that because it protrudes from the wall, there is a limit to the depth of the soffit. While common lumber makes up the frame of the soffit, use hardwood or paintable wood to make the fronts.

Instructions

1. Locate the area for the desired soffit. Place the stud finder on the wall near the ceiling and mark the studs.

2. Measure down from the ceiling in one corner of the wall and make a mark at 10 inches. Repeat this in the opposite corner on the same wall. Pull the chalk line from mark to mark and pop a line on the wall.

3. Place the bottom edge of a 2-by-4 on the line and secure it to the wall and into the studs with the 3-inch drywall screws. Next, place a 1-by-6-inch piece of lumber on the bottom edge of the 2-by-4 and secure it to the 2-by-4 with the 2-inch drywall screws.

4. Secure a 1-by-6 to the front edge of the 1-by-6 from Step 3 with the 1½-inch drywall screws. This is the faceplate of the soffit.

5. Place a 1-by-4-by-5½-inch piece of lumber on top of the 2-by-4 and behind the faceplate of the soffit. Secure it in place with the 1½-inch drywall screws through the faceplate and into the 1-by-4-by-5½-inch piece of lumber.
