Install Shelves In Drywall

Installing shelves in drywall is an easy way to create extra storage in your home. The drywall anchors are important when you install anything that must hold weight. They allow you to put more items on the shelves without having them fall down or damage the drywall.

Instructions

1. Choose the right wall anchors for the project. They come in a variety of styles and function differently in different types of walls. Make sure the anchors you choose can hold the weight of the shelf and the items you want put on it. Your local hardware store can help you choose the appropriate wall anchors.

2. Measure the shelf and mark the wall where you plan to hang it. If the shelf has mounting brackets attached to it, measure and mark the location of those brackets. Use a level to ensure that you hang the shelf straight.

3. Drill a hole in the wall that's smaller than the anchor to ensure that the grips embed into the wall. If the hole is too big and the anchor is loose, it can't hold the weight of the shelf.

4. Hammer the anchor into the hole. The anchor must be flush with the wall.

5. Insert the screw into the anchor using either an electric or hand-held screwdriver. The screw pushes out the walls of the anchor and the grips sink into the wall. The screw also spreads open the tails on the end of the anchor for added support.

6. Back up the screw or remove it, depending on the shelf. With some designs, you must hang the shelf directly on the screws, while others require that you hold the shelf or brackets in place by inserting the screws in a specific location.
