Dissolve Clay

Clay is used to build adobe structures.

Clay soil is compact, has poor drainage and is difficult to dig or plow through. It is impossible for plants to take root in these conditions. To dissolve clay means to add organic and inorganic materials to make it viable for growing plants. There is no universal recipe to achieve this, so a professional soil analysis must be obtained to find the individual requirements for each area needed to be amended.

Instructions

1. Take five soil samples from different sections of the area to be tested. Take the samples 6 to 8 inches deep with a soil probe. Put each sample into a separate plastic bag. Place a strip of masking tape on each bag and clearly write on the tape what is inside and where it came from.

2. Take the samples to the nearest cooperative extension office and ask for a soil analysis, which will provide specific information on what soil amendments are required.

3. Mix the soil amendment according to the instructions provided in the soil test. It will include a combination of compost, limestone, gravel, fertilizer, gypsum and peat moss.

4. Dig up the clay using a tiller or spade, depending the size of the area. Work the area when it is slightly moist and to a depth of 8 inches. Spread 2 inches of amendment over the entire area, mixing it in with the tiller or spade. Water the area lightly and add a second 2-inch layer of amendments. Mix the soil again, breaking up any chunks of clay.
