Repair An Opening In Plaster Board

Fill in a hole in plaster board.

Wallboard, or plaster board, is the most common building material for walls today. The benefits of plaster board over traditional plaster are many. It is cheaper, easier to install and more efficient. However, damage to the board can occur and holes in plaster board are not uncommon. Luckily they are also not hard to fix. With the right tools and a little know-how the do-it-yourselfer can fix a hole in an afternoon.

Instructions

1. Clean out the hole. Use a small putty knife and scrape around the edges of the hole. Remove any lose material, ensuring that the remaining plasterboard is firm and secure.

2. Apply fiberglass mesh tape. Cut a piece of tape long enough to overlap the hole by about a half an inch all around. You made need more than one strip of tape if the hole is larger than an inch square. When using more than one strip of tape be sure to overlap the strips.

3. Cover the taped hole with joint compound. Use a putty knife to apply the putty and smooth out the edges. Let dry for an hour and then apply a second coat to be sure mesh tape is completely covered. Let second coat dry for an hour.

4. Sand the repair. Use 120-grit sandpaper and lightly sand over the putty. Do not sand so hard that the mesh begins to show. The goal is simply to smooth out the edges so they blend in with the rest of the wall.

5. Paint or patch the wallpaper as desired.
