Drywall Corners & Roofs

Ceiling corner joints must be straight and smooth.

Drywall comes in large panels, which drywall hangers install over wood studs. Ceilings require an extra level of attention during the finishing process because of the high visibility of the long corner joints.

Considerations

Drywall hangers often use drywall screws in the center portion of the ceiling and use drywall nails near the corners. They do this because using a screw gun near tight corners is difficult.

Function

Drywall finishers seal the joints between panels of drywall by inserting a piece of paper drywall tape into a thick coating of joint compound, then wiping it smooth.

Features

Ceiling corner joints receive the same treatment as flat joints, but finishers fold the paper tape in half lengthwise before placing it on the corner joints. This makes the corner look sharp.

Expert Insight

Corners that are greater than 90 degrees require special vinyl-paper composite drywall tape. The stiff tape makes a firm, straight corner where there was none before.

Fun Fact

Drywall finishers use a special tool called an inside-corner roller to spread the joint compound over ceiling corner joints quickly and evenly.
