The Very Best Practices For Quality Drywall Installation

Try these drywall best practices.

Millions of homes are sold or built in the U.S. every year. Whether it is a new property or an existing home, a quality drywall installation can make or break a home sale. For both contractors and DIY homeowners, installing drywall can be difficult. Unless you know what you are doing, drywall installation can be a nightmare that ends up looking worse than you ever imagined. Some drywall installation best practices can help.

Foundation is Squared Away

Before you even consider installing drywall, make sure the drywall will be placed in a level area that is free from moisture and water damage. Insulation should not be over-packed or bulging out of place, water leaks should be fixed and bowed or bent boards may need to be shimmed for a level drywall hanging.

Proper Storage

Do not store gypsum drywall in a damp place before installation. Additionally, drywall should not be placed on the ground, but on pallets or boards that raise the gypsum from the ground. Similarly, joint compound should be stored at room temperature.

Excellent Coverage

After the walls have been properly mudded, inspect them carefully. No tape should show through, and screws must not be visible. As always, be sure to inspect closets or in the basement for problems as they can be easily overlooked. In all areas, the mud should carefully feather out and be flush with the wall. Once proper coverage is achieved, the drywall joint compound or mud needs to be sanded for a proper finish.
