Cut Wood Joints For Curved Projects

Woodworking projects that are curved are the most difficult projects to handle. You must know some basic steps in making curved wood joints. Don't be in a hurry on this type of project. You must work slowly and precisely to achieve your goal.

Instructions

1. Cut wood joints for curved projects by first determining the diameter of your curved project. The tighter the diameter, the more difficult the project becomes. A smaller radius pattern gives you less tolerance for mistakes.

2. Use kerf cuts on plywood when you cut wood joints for curved projects. These joints are fairly easy to cut, but your depth must be correct and the width in between each cut must be precise. Kerf cutting makes your plywood flexible and bendable for a curved project. A table saw is the best tool to use for kerf cuts. Your kerf cuts on plywood must be vertical instead of horizontal in order to allow the wood to bend for a project such as a curved table surround, for example.

3. Start with a scrap piece of plywood. Cut kerf joints in this practice piece to see if it bends on the radius you are looking for before you cut wood joints for curved projects. It helps the wood to bend if you use a light spray mist of water or steam on the plywood. This makes it more flexible.

4. Attach clamps generously as you work your kerf joints around your curved project. Make sure you glue also in order to hold the radius in place. Finish nails may also be required.
