Hang Panel Board Over Sheetrock

There are many different types of panel board.

Panel board is made of fine hardwood or pine. It comes in 4-foot-by-8 foot sheets and can be used on walls anywhere in your house. It is very thin, ranging from 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch, and comes in many different styles. Some types have grooves running vertically while other types are flat. Homeowners often install paneling to make a room stand out instead of keeping plain wallboard exposed. Panel board easily installs over wallboard no matter the thickness and can add a little bit of charm to your home.

Instructions

1. Run a tape measure along each wall of the room. Record the height and width of each wall and multiply the two together for the square footage of each side. Add all four sides together and write down the square footage of the room.

2. Divide the square footage by 32, which is the area in square feet of a sheet of panel board. Write down the number of sheets needed for installation. Place all of the sheets in the room where the installation will take place so the wood can adjust to the room's humidity.

3. Apply liquid nails to the the panel board with a caulk gun. Run a bead around the perimeter of the panel board. Spread the adhesive out with a trowel until there is a full, thin coat.

4. Stand up the first piece of paneling vertically along the wall and press it into place. Run your hands over the whole piece and press it onto the wallboard. Run a stud finder along the wall until the light turns red to indicate a stud. Studs are generally spaced out every 16 or 24 inches.

5. Hammer in two finishing nails at each stud location along the top of the panel board. Add two more nails in the middle and two at the bottom of each stud to hold the panel board in place.

6. Butt the edge of second piece of paneling up against the edge of the first and install it like the previous piece. Move down the wall until reaching the end of the first side. Cut the panel board to size with a saber saw. Measure and mark for the cut. Follow along the mark with the saw and install the piece the same way. Continue until all of the panel board in the room is installed.
