A big trend in decorating today is the use of a child's name on their walls or in their décor to further personalize the space. Some parents simply use initials, while others use the child's preferred name. Either way, there are a few simple and creative ways in which to personalize a child's room through monogramming and decoration. Here are a few tips on create that look in your child's room today.

1. Flip through children's décor catalogs and websites, such as Pottery Barn Kids and Lillian Vernon, for inspiration. Initials and monogramming are big themes. The looks in the catalog vary from monogrammed sheets and bedding, to large wall letters featuring the child's name. The look varies depending upon the sex and age of the child. Look to see which colors and themes draw your eye. If your child is old enough, have them flip through the catalogs as well to see what they like.
2. To create a more formal look, use just your child's initials in the décor. Have a professional monogram their initials (first, last and middle) into items throughout the room. Lamp shades, sheets, comforters, pillows, chair covers and cross-stitched pictures are just a few of the items that can be used in monogramming. Remember that less is more. If more than three pieces of décor are monogrammed, it will be too much.
3. To create a fun, whimsical look, purchase simple wooden cut-out letters at a craft store spelling out your child's given name. Use the colors in the room for inspiration, or simply stick to blue for a boy and pink for a girl. Hang the letters on the wall above your child's bed. Stagger the letters up and down, hung from ribbons and nailed into the wall. Decorate the letters in solid colors or add polka dots for smaller children. Coordinate the ribbons to the colors used in the letters.
You could also stencil the child's name onto a solid colored throw pillow to use in a sitting chair or as a throw pillow on their bed. Remember to copy the letters on the wall to carry the theme further.
