Applying drywall texture is a unique way to change a room.
Changing the decor in a room can be very expensive. Texturing drywall is a unique, affordable way to change a room. Texturing also covers up drywall imperfections. Give the walls a country feel by making a lacy texture with a trowel in crescent moon shapes, or go modern with a sponge texture in which you just press and lift. Many people like the thick rough troweled look with peaks, nooks and crannies in the texture, which looks like rough Spanish stucco. Doing it yourself is very rewarding. Textured walls turn out to be a piece of art, handcrafted by you.
Instructions
1. Choose a tool to make a special texture.
Remove all wallpaper, switch and outlet covers and anything else on the walls. Move the furniture to the middle of the room and cover it with plastic sheets. Put down drop cloths on the floor all around the room.
2. Textures are created by brushes, sponges, trowels or taping knives.
Get the tool that will make the texture pattern you want. Choose from the trowel, wide-blade taping knife, large paintbrush, wallpaper brush, sponge, comb or any other texturing "tool" that will create the effect you wish.
3. Paint the newly textured wall your favorite color.
Apply the drywall compound onto the wall in small 3-by-3-foot areas. Then make your texture on that area of compound. Keep working the walls in small areas at a time with these two steps: (1) apply the compound, (2) texture it.
