Calculate Drywall Needs

Drywall is manufactured in boards that measure less than an inch thick.

Drywall is a building material that consists of sheets of paper pressed over gypsum board. The introduction of this material made home construction and remodeling easier and faster as walls and ceilings could be finished quickly by two workers, unlike the old method of installing plaster on walls, which required four or five workers per room and could take days to finish. Drywall is often sold in sheets that measure 4 by 8 feet. Calculating the amount of drywall that you need for a job can help in the planning and budgeting process.

Instructions

1. Measure the length and height of the walls in the room. Multiply the two measurements to determine the square footage of the walls.

2. Determine the length and height of any windows or doors in the walls and multiply these measurements to calculate the square footage of the space.

3. Add together the square footage for each wall then add the square footage of the openings (doors and windows).

4. Subtract the square footage for the doors and windows from the square footage of the walls.

5. Measure the length and width of the ceiling and multiply those numbers together to calculate the square footage.

6. Add the square footage of the ceiling to the square footage of the walls (minus the doors and windows). This gives you the square footage of space that needs to be covered in drywall for the room.

7. Repeat this process for any other room in which you're installing drywall. Add the drywall requirements for every room together.

8. Divide the total square footage needed for the project by the square footage of the drywall sheets that you're using. If the drywall measures 4 by 8 feet, that would be 32 square feet. This tells you how many drywall sheets you need for the project.
