Trim & Edge Sheetrock For Any Ceiling

Trim & Edge Sheetrock for a Ceiling

Sheetrock is a common term for gypsum drywall, which comes in large panels. Often, builders need to trim and edge Sheetrock to install it. While it is possible to use nothing more than a utility knife, most drywall professionals use a collection of specialized drywall tools to ensure the highest quality trimming and edging. These tools are available in retail hardware stores and building-supply outlets. Although they are expensive, using these tools will save you in the long run because they leave the Sheetrock edges smooth and even, making the subsequent drywall finishing an easier task.

Instructions

1. Use a measuring tape to determine the exact dimensions of the area of the ceiling that the Sheetrock will cover.

2. Lean a panel of Sheetrock against a wall.

3. Use the measuring tape and a pencil to mark where you need to cut the Sheetrock.

4. Place the drywall T-square on the Sheetrock so that the short side of the tool is parallel to the floor (i.e. it is in an upright "T" position). Align the long side of the T-square with the pencil mark you made.

5. Hold the T-square firmly with one hand while you use a utility knife to score the Sheetrock with the other. Use the T-square to keep your score line perfectly straight.

6. Snap the Sheetrock at the score line by pushing one side sharply while firmly holding the other side.

7. Slide the utility knife up the crease to break the paper backing of the snapped Sheetrock.

8. Use a drywall rasp to smooth the edges of the Sheetrock. To do this, hold the

Sheetrock with one hand while briskly rubbing the drywall rasp up and down the length of the rough edge. When you are finished, the Sheetrock should have a smooth, even edge.

9. Hang the Sheetrock as normal. Attach it to the ceiling's wood studs by installing one drywall screw every 4 to 6 inches.
