Install Drywall Edges

Drywall is used to cover all wall and ceiling surfaces in most homes. Most of the panels are put up in large pieces that cover a good portion of the wall at once, but in areas where there are outer corners and an exposed end of the wall, the drywall edges must be cut to fit the narrow section and maintain the right angles of the corners.

Instructions

1. Measure the width of the end of the wall where it creates anouter corner. The drywall along both sides of the wall should be installed all the way to the edge or corner of the wall frame, and the end piece of drywall is attached over top of the side pieces so that its edges end even with them, forming a right-angle corner.

2. Transfer the measurement of the width of the drywall piece you'll use to the drywall. Use a straight line to mark where it needs to be cut. Score the drywall with a utility knife along the drawn line. It is best if you leave the straight edge on the drywall so that your knife doesn't slip or curve.

3. Place the drywall on the edge of a table or other flat surface and press down to snap the material along the score. You might need more than one piece to cover the full height of the end of the wall.

4. Place the drywall piece over the end of the wall so that it is even with the side drywall. Use drywall screws to attach it. Drill the screws into the end of the wall frame.

5. Place drywall metal strips on the corners of the wall to protect the edges. The strips have holes where you can insert screws and drill them into the wall. Once the edges of the wall are protected, finish installing the other drywall, and then finish the walls by covering seams with tape and smoothing over the surface with drywall compound and a drywall knife.
