Join Drywall To Paneling

Wood paneling must be raised to meet the drywall to provide a level seam.

Drywall provides a palette for on which to create your interior design with paint and texture. Paneling gives the feel of a more traditional, wooden home. Both of these materials have their place in wall construction and can even be used in adjoining rooms. The problem with joining these two distinctly different walls is the surface level. Paneling is not as thick as drywall, so joining the two means bringing the face of the paneling out to meet the surface of the drywall.

Instructions

1. Apply a bead of caulk to the seam between the paneling and drywall. Wipe the caulk smooth with a wet rag. Let the caulk cure for two hours before continuing.

2. Cut two pieces of trim with your miter box. Fit both pieces exactly between the ceiling and the top of the baseboard. Hold each piece up to the wall away from the work area to check for a precise fit.

3. Hold one of the pieces of trim up to the seam. Place the trim to lay only on the paneling and beside the edge of the drywall. Drive a 4d nail through the trim and into the paneling every 36 inches with your hammer.

4. Hold your second piece of trim up to the seam. Place half of the piece over the first piece of trim and half over the drywall. Nail it in place with a 4d nail every 18 inches down the length of the seam.

5. Countersink each of the nail heads with your nail set. Press wood putty into the holes above the nail heads. Wipe the putty smooth with your fingertip and let it dry for 15 minutes.

6. Run a strip of painter's tape along each side of the trim pieces. Apply two coats of paint over the trim. Let the first coat of paint dry completely before applying the next coat. Remove the tape as soon as you apply the second coat of paint.

7. Let the paint dry and apply a bead of caulk to each seam around the trim pieces. Smooth the caulk with a wet rag and let the caulk dry overnight.
