Kill Mold In Drywall

Cut out the mold area of drywall.

Drywall is the perfect harbor for mold. This is due to the spores of mold, which allow easy access to air while giving the mold something to latch onto. It also makes it just as easy for the mold to spread. Because mold spreads faster on drywall than on wood or other building materials, it is extremely important to kill off the mold from your drywall before it spreads throughout your home.

Instructions

1. Measure out an area around the mold with a pencil and ruler. Having a straight rectangle around the mold helps patch the mold area when you are done.

2. Spray adhesive to the moldy area, then place a piece of cardboard onto the mold. Allow several minutes for the cardboard to dry to the adhesive.

3. Cut out the rectangle with a drywall knife. Remove the moldy drywall (it has the cardboard covering the mold) and place the piece in a trash bag. This prevents the mold from spreading to other areas of the room.

4. Place a 1-by-4 inside the cut hole, making sure it stretches from the top of the cut hole to the bottom. Use a C-clamp to hold the 1-by-4 in place, then hammer a nail at the top of the hole and the bottom. This secures the 1-by-4 in the interior of the cut hole.

5. Measure out a replacement piece of drywall and place it into the cut hole. Hammer in a nail at the top and bottom of the piece. The replacement drywall holds onto the 1-by-4.

6. Run Fiberglass adhesive mesh over the areas with the nails. Spread drywall compound over the mesh. Wait a few hours for the material to dry, then sand it down to smooth out any rough edges. Repaint the area to match the rest of your wall.
