Use A Cinder Block Retaining Wall

Cinder block retaining walls are versatile and strong.

Building a retaining wall with cinder blocks offers more options than stackable stone blocks. Cinder blocks are hollow on the inside, which provides room for drainage pipes, support rebar and even cement for durability. Cinder block retaining walls can be built as high as necessary and support more weight than standard retaining walls. Install a cinder block retaining wall by pouring a cement foundation, placing the blocks over rebars and filling the blocks with cement.

Instructions

Install a Cinder Block Retaining Wall

1. Dig a trench 12 inches deep and 12 inches wide, following the exact path of your desired retaining wall.

2. Pour eight inches of cement into the ditch, using a trowel to smooth and level the cement.

3. Bend the end of each rebar into an "L" shape. Place them into the cement, sticking straight upward, burying the "L" portion into the cement. Do not allow the rebars to touch the dirt, or they will erode.

4. Place your first row of blocks with the rebars going through the hollow spaces and resting against the back of the block.

5. Fill the first row of blocks with cement and allow to set.

6. Cut notches into the cinder blocks for PVC drainage pipes. Run the pipes into the notches before continuing. Place one drainage pipe between every other cinder block.

7. Continue placing cinder blocks accordingly until you reach the desired height, allowing the cement to set between each row.
