Floor Patch & Leveler Directions

Floor patch and leveler is the name of a type of leveling compound. Several construction supply manufacturers sell products using this name. Like any leveling compound, floor patch and leveler is used to fill in dips or small holes and cracks in concrete, cement or wood surfaces. Before you can patch and level a surface with floor patch and leveler, however, you must identify the cracks, holes and areas of the floor that sit low.

Instructions

1. Place a flat wood board in the corner of the floor you want to level. Lower your head to nearly floor level and try to look beneath the board. Mark any spot where the floor does not touch the bottom of the board with chalk.

2. Slide the board over a few inches and repeat the process. Continue over the entire floor surface, looking for spots that sit lower than the rest of the floor, and mark each spot you find.

3. Wipe out the first spot on the floor that you need to level with a wet rag to remove dust and the chalk mark that you made. Don't worry about drying the area.

4. Spread the floor patch and leveler onto the spot with a putty knife. Remove the excess compound from the putty knife by scraping it on the side of the bucket and wipe the putty knife with a rag to remove the residue from the knife. Place the edge of the putty knife against the floor on one side of the spot you filled and pull it across the filled surface to take off excess compound. Remove any compound left on the floor around the spot with a rag.

5. Move onto the next spot that you marked and repeat the entire process. Clean the area with a wet rag, spread floor patch and leveler over the surface, skim away extra compound, and remove any compound from the surrounding surface.

6. Let the spots that you filled with floor patch and leveler dry for 24 hours. Once dry, repeat the board test to check for the levelness of the floor. If you find any filled spots that now sit higher than the floor, sand the spots down to level with fine-grit sandpaper.
